TI0002 - English - Is there any proof (in Quran and Sunnah) for reading Surah Ya-Seen for the departed/deceased?

Is there any proof (in Quran and Sunnah) for reciting Surah Ya-Seen for the departed/deceased?

The practice of reciting Surah Ya-Seen near a person during his deathbed is followed by certain Tamizh Muslims. As proof for this practice, certain scholars point to the following hadiths:

Narrated Ma'qil ibn Yasar:
The Prophet (ﷺ) said: Recite Surah Ya-Seen over your dying men. This is the version of Ibn al-Ala'
Reference  : Sunan Abi Dawud 3121
In-book reference  : Book 21, Hadith 33
English translation  : Book 20, Hadith 3115

It was narrated from Ma’qil bin Yasar that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: “Recite Qur’an near your dying ones,” meaning Ya-Seen.
Grade : Da’if (Darussalam)
English reference  : Vol. 1, Book 6, Hadith 1448
Arabic reference  : Book 6, Hadith 1515

Similarly, this hadith has been recorded in other books as well. In all of these hadiths, as reported by father of Abu Usman, this hadith was reported by Ma'qil ibn Yasar. And this is reported by Abu Usman.

As per the scholars in hadith field, Abu Usman and father of Abu Usman are unsourced (not known). Therefore, this is a weak hadith.

The compiler of Musnad al-Firdaus attributes this hadith to Abu ad-Darda and Abu Dharr. They both narrated: "The Prophet (pbuh) said: 'If any person is on his deathbed and Surah Ya-Seen is recited to him, Allah makes his suffering easier'."
Reported by: Abu ad-Darda and Abu Dharr
Book: Musnad Firdaus

Salim bin Marwan involved in this reported hadith is known to be weak.
Taking note that, none of the hadiths referring that Surah Yaseen should be recited at the deathbed of a person are sound/saheeh; such practices must be avoided.

Many from our community believe that reciting Quran to the deceased, would send reward/benefit of it to that deceased individual. This practice is also being called as ‘khatam’.

Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) had not taught such practice in worship.

In the lifetime of Prophet Muhammad (pbuh), his wife Khadija (RA) had passed away. Prophet’s daughter Zainab (RA) had passed away. His son Ibrahim (RA) had passed away. For any of these deceased members, it is not reported to have seen Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) reciting Quran, so that its reward/benefit could be sent to them.

Moreover, many companions had passed away during the lifetime of Prophet. For these deceased companions, neither Prophet nor other companions are reported to have done any such practice. If this practice in worship was approved by Allah, Prophet would have surely done it. Hence, this is an act of bidah (innovation) that can drag towards to Hell.

This bidah was created by fraudulent Aalims (scholars) to swindle (appropriate money by deceiving) from the people.

Therefore, reciting Quran for the sake of deceased would not send the reward of it to the deceased person.
