TI0006 - English - The month of Muharram and the superstition

The month of Muharram and the superstition

The sayings of the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) highlight the first month of the hijri calendar, Muharram, in a positive manner. But, many Muslims tell that this month as being as an inauspicious/ill-fated month.

They tell that as Hussain (ra), the grandson of Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) was killed in this month, so any good works should not be undertaken in this month.

Wedding should not be conducted, sexual intercouse should not happen, non-vegetarian food is not to be consumed etc; in this manner, the very acts that were allowed by Allah’s messenger are prohibited by them.

Furthermore, in order to express their sorrow, they harm themselves with weapons.
Bearing patience when difficulty befalls and accepting the decree set by Allah, are the duties of a believer of God.

During the times of tribulation (suffering), Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) allowed a maximum of three days to be sorrowful. Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) had also warned that no one can remain (sorrowful) beyond those (three) days.

Going against this warning, every year observing a day of grievance for a companion of Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) who was killed 1400 years ago; goes directly against the convention of Islam.

During the times of Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) there have been many male companions and female companions who have got killed and died. Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) did not commemorate every year a day of grievance for them. Let alone them, when we don’t commemorate a day of grievance even for Prophet Muhammad (pbuh), then one should think about how is this correct to commemorate a day of grievance every year because Hussain (ra) was killed.

Allah had saved Prophet Musa (pbuh) from the tyrant Firaun, in the month of Muharram. For this, Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) commanded to keep fast on ninth and tenth day of the month of Muharram. By observing the duty of those fasting, let us follow the true path of the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh).
