TI0011 - English - Lailatul Qadr and its virtues

Lailatul Qadr and its virtues

The reward i.e equivalent of doing goodness for thousand months in just one night ..

Indeed, We sent the Qur'an down during the Lailatul Qadr (The Magnificent Night).
And what can make you know what is the Lailatul Qadr  (The Magnificent Night)?
The Lailatul Qadr (The Magnificent Night) is better than a thousand months.
The angels and the Spirit descend therein by permission of their Lord for every matter.
Peace it is until the emergence of dawn.
[Al Quran, Chapter 97, v1-5]

The previous sins are forgiven:

Narrated Abu Huraira:
Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said, "Whoever establishes the prayers on the night of Qadr out of sincere faith and hoping to attain Allah's rewards (not to show off) then all his past sins will be forgiven.

Lailatul Qadr is on what date?:

Narrated 'Ubada bin As-Samit:
"Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) went out to inform the people about the (date of the) night of decree (Al-Qadr) but there happened a quarrel between two Muslim men. The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "I came out to inform you about (the date of) the night of Al-Qadr, but as so and so and so and so quarrelled, its knowledge was taken away (I forgot it) and maybe it was better for you. Now look for it in the 7th, the 9th and the 5th (of the last 10 nights of the month of Ramadan)."

Narrated Nafi`:
Ibn `Umar said, "In the lifetime of the Prophet (ﷺ) I dreamt that a piece of silk cloth was in my hand and it flew with me to whichever part of Paradise I wanted. I also saw as if two persons (i.e. angels) came to me and wanted to take me to Hell. Then an angel met us and told me not to be afraid. He then told them to leave me. Hafsa narrated one of my dreams to the Prophet (ﷺ) and the Prophet (ﷺ) said, "Abdullah is a good man. Would that he offer the night prayer (Tahajjud)!" So after that day `Abdullah (bin `Umar) started offering Tahajjud. The companions of the Prophet (p.b.u.h) used to tell him their dreams that (Laila-tul-Qadr) was on the 27th of the month of Ramadan. The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "I see that your dreams agree on the last ten nights of Ramadan and so whoever is in search of it should seek it in the last ten nights of Ramadan."

As this hadith clearly mentions that Prophet Muhammad (saws) himself didn’t knew, no human being on this earth can then say this specific night is that particular night. Nevertheless, there are authentic hadiths with Prophet Muhammad (saws) saying that, Lailatul Qadr could be one of the odd numbered nights from the last ten days in the month of Ramadan.

Narrated 'Ubada bin As-Samit:
Prophet Muhammad (saws) while informing us about Lailatul Qadr said that is in the month of Ramadhan. “Therefore, seek it in Ramadan in the last ten nights. For verily, it is during the odd numbered nights, the twenty-first, or the twenty-third, or the twenty-fifth, or the twenty-seventh, or the twenty-ninth, or during the last night. Whoever stays awake in anticipation of laylat al-Qadr, and succeeds in getting it, will have all of his past sins will be forgiven.
Reference : Ahmad 20700

The above mentioned hadiths undoubtedly shows clearly that, Lailatul Qadr could be one of the odd numbered nights from the last ten days in the month of Ramadan.

Is Lailatul Qadr the 27th night?:

We saw from authentic hadiths that Lailatul Qadr could be one of the odd numbered nights from the last ten days in the month of Ramadan. But, the general public ignorant of hadiths decide that Lailatul Qadr is indeed on 27th night and hold a great ceremony with celebration. For this, is there any evidence in the hadiths? Let’s see about it.

Narrated Mu'awiyah b. Abi Sufyan :
The Prophet (ﷺ) as saying: Lailat al-qadr is the twenty-seventh night (of Ramadan)

Based on hadiths similar to the above, some proclaim that Lailatul Qadr is indeed on 27th night.

If this was the only hadith then we could decide that it is indeed the 27th night only. But, differing to this, as mentioned before in an authentic hadith Prophet Muhammad (saws) after clearly mentioning that he himself was made to be forgotten about it, he had commanded to seek it in the odd nights in the last ten nights of Ramadan. Moreover similar to 27th night, there is also about the 23rd night. Let’s see them ahead here.

'Abdullah b. Unais reported Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) as saying:
I was shown Lailat-ul-Qadr; then I was made to forget it, and saw that I was prostrating in water and clay in the morning of that (night). He (the narrator) said: There was a downpour on the twenty-third night and the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) led us in prayer, and as he went back, there was a trace of water and clay on his forehead and on his nose. He (the narrator) said: 'Abdullah b. Unais used to say that it was the twenty-third (night).Reference : Sahih Muslim 1168

Narrated 'Ubada bin As-Samit:
The companions of the Prophet asked Prophet Muhammad (saws) about Lailatul Qadr, the night that had to be seeked in the month of Ramadan. For that Prophet Muhammad (saws) answered that is in the 23rd night.

Similarly, it is also mentioned about the three nights, 21, 23 and 25.

Narrated Ibn `Abbas:

With many report like this, what is the correct opinion? Imam Shafi has given a clear answer for this.

Tirmidzi: 722)

For these different sayings by Prophet Muhammad (saws), Imam Shafi explains, “Prophet used to answer as appropriate to the question being asked. When questioned, ‘Can Lailatul Qadr be sought after on this date?’. He would answer affirmatively (to that question) to seek on that night.”

That is, a companion of the Prophet would have asked ‘Can Lailatul Qadr be sought after on 21st night?’. Then, Prophet Muhammad (saws) would have answered affirmatively (to that question) to seek on 21st night. Another companion of the Prophet would have asked ‘Can Lailatul Qadr be seeked on 23rd night?’. Then, Prophet Muhammad (saws) would have answered affirmatively (to that question) to seek on 23rd night. In this manner, they might have asked about the five odd numbered nights, and accordingly Prophet Muhammad (saws) would have answered. Thereby, all the five odd numbered nights have present in the hadiths. This opinion seems to be the explanation for those differing hadiths.
