TI0017 - English - Jummah (Friday) prayer

[List of Contents - Rulings of prayer (Thozhugai sattangal book by MI Sulaiman)]

Jummah (Friday) prayer

Jummah prayer is the two rak’ats prayer that is observed instead of the dhuhr prayer, after the khutba (sermon) given by the Imam from the mimbar(pulpit).
Time:

Jummah prayer can be prayed in dhuhr time as well. Can be prayed just before when the sun tilts slightly towards the west as well. There is evidence for both in the hadiths.

Arriving before the Khutba (sermon):

For Jummah one should come to masjid before the Imam climbs the mimbar (pulpit).
Narrated Abu Huraira:
The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "When it is a Friday, the angels stand at the gate of the mosque and keep on writing the names of the persons coming to the mosque in succession according to their arrivals. The example of the one who enters the mosque in the earliest hour is that of one offering a camel (in sacrifice). The one coming next is like one offering a cow and then a ram and then a chicken and then an egg respectively. When the Imam comes out (for Jumua prayer) they (i.e. angels) fold their papers and listen to the Khutba."

Abu Huraira reported Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) as saying:
There is an angel on every door of the mosque recording him first who (comes) first (to the mosque for Friday prayer). And he [the Prophet] likened him to one who offers a camel as a sacrifice and then he went on in the descending order till he reached the point at which the minimum (sacrifice) is that of an egg. And when the Imam sits (on the pulpit) the sheets are folded and they (the angels) attend to the mention of Allah.

Leaving one’s business/trade:

On the day of Jummah, one should not do involve in business during the time of Jummah prayer. Once the adhan (call to prayer) is announced, one should hasten/hurry towards the prayer.

O ye who believe! When the call is proclaimed to prayer on Friday (the Day of Assembly), hasten earnestly to the Remembrance of Allah, and leave off business (and traffic): That is best for you if ye but knew!
[ Al Quran, Chapter 62, Verse 9]

Despite Arafah being on Friday, Prophet Muhammad (saws) did not fulfil Jummah prayer instead he prayed the dhuhr prayer. Therefore, we can understand that Jummah prayer is not obligatory for a traveller.

Adhan for Jummah:

Similar to the adhan (call to prayer) made for the five obligatory prayer, there should be a single adhan made for Jummah prayer. That adhan must be made while the Imam sits on the mimbar (pulpit).

Narrated Az-Zuhri:
I heard As-Saib bin Yazid, saying, "In the lifetime of Allah's Messenger (ﷺ), and Abu Bakr and `Umar, the Adhan for the Jumua prayer used to be pronounced after the Imam had taken his seat on the pulpit. But when the people increased in number during the caliphate of `Uthman, he introduced a third Adhan (on Friday for the Jumua prayer) and it was pronounced at Az-Zaura' and that new state of affairs remained so in the succeeding years.

It was narrated that Sa’ib bin Yazid said:
“The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) had only one Mu’adh-dhin. When he came out he would give the Adhan and when he came down (from the pulpit) he would give the Iqamah. Abu Bakr and ‘Umar did likewise, but when ‘Uthman (became caliph) the numbers of people had increased, he added the third call from atop a house in the marketplace that was called Zawra’. When he came out (the Mu’adh-dhin) would call the Adhan, and when he came down from the pulpit, he would call the Iqamah.

Even the call arranged by Uthman (rah) was not done in the Masjid. Therefore, the correct understanding is that Uthman (rah) did not create two adhans.

If we assume that Uthman (rah) had indeed introduced two adhans, even then it is obligatory for Muslims being commanded to follow the way of the Prophet Muhammad (saws) only. Any act which contradicts the practice of Prophet Muhammad (saws) shall not become religion regardless of who it is. Henceforth, it is the practice of giving single adhan for Jummah prayer, the way of the Prophet Muhammad (saws).

One should not speak during Khutba (sermon):

While khutba (sermon) being delivered by the Imam during Jummah prayer, one who is listening the khutba (sermon) should not be speaking.

Surahs that should be recited:

Prophet Muhammad (saws) had recited Al-A’la (87th) Surah in first rak’at and Al-Ghashiya (88th) in the second rak’at of the Jummah prayer.

Sometimes Al-Jumu’ah (62nd) Surah and Al-Munafiqun (63rd) Surah (in second rak’at) were being recited by him.

Nu'man b. Bashir reported that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) used to recite on two 'Ids and in Friday prayer:
" Glorify The name of Thy Lord, the Most High" (Surah 87, Al-A’la), and:" Has there come to thee the news of the overwhelming event" (Surah 88, Al-Ghashiya). And when the 'Id and Jumu'a combined on a day he recited these two (surah) in both the prayers.

The sunnah of Jummah:

Two rak’ats must be prayed before Jummah prayer. Even if Imam is giving the khutba (sermon) one should quickly pray the two rak’ats.

Jabir b. 'Abdullah said that a person entered the Mosque while the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) was delivering the sermon on Friday. Upon this he (the Holy Prophet) said:
Have you observed prayer? He said: No. He (the Holy Prophet) said: Stand and offer the two rak'ahs. According to Qutaiba, the words are:" He said: Offer two rak'ahs."

In addition to this from a hadith in Muslim and Abu Dawud the statement ‘it is as observe two rak'ahs and make them short’ is being mentioned.
