TI0009 - English - The baraat night, the night which can make one sinful

The baraat night, the night which can make one sinful

The excitement once the sun rises! In the Muslim household, immediately after waking up the women folks asking the husband about the meat to be purchased without fail, inviting the ‘hazrat’ (local Islamic priest) in advance for the ‘fatiha’ to be read, and such activities shall display the excitement across home.

Well, is that all? In the evening the baked rottis (breads), that which is meant for distributing for every home shall be arranged like skyscrapers/tall buildings. Some, would cook chicken curry as their ‘nerchai’ (ritualistic offering with intention for specific wants).

In the masjid itself once the maghrib prayer is completed, the grand recitation of Surat-ul-Fatiha would start. There would be this queue of children in one side waiting to pick the ‘hazrat’ (local Islamic priest). Some household would have sent the ‘rottis’ (breads) even to the masjid. Beyond the usual ambience, the smell of meat dishes shall be uplifting.

After the prayers have been completed, the ‘hazrat’ (local Islamic priest) shall read the Surah Yaseen in the verandah/porch (inside the masjid when there is no verandah/porch). Do you know how many times would that be? It is supposed to be read three times. Why?

The first Yaseen is for the forgiveness of sins.
The second Yaseen is for the deceased as hadhiya (offering/gift), and for one’s lifetime to be made long.
The third Yaseen is for receiving barkat (blessing). In total the Yaseen is read thrice.

Not that alone! The isha prayer which usually happens around 8pm, shall instead happen at around 10pm on that night. The reason being the inability of the ‘hazrat’ (local Islamic priest) to reach by 8pm jamaat (group) prayers due to the ‘faatiha’ orders that have to be completed. When it comes to the Allah’s commanded prayer, the ‘baraat night’ created by someone instead has been held more significant, by a seven year trained religious scholar?

Special prayers too shall happen on that day. Do you know how many rakaats (unit of prayer)? 100 rakats it is said. In many other places, prayers having much more rakaats also does exist.

What is the astonishing factor in here is, the Sunnath Jamaat Ulamaas who conduct these shall give priority to madhab books over the Quran and Sunnah. The amusing thing is those madhab books are contrary to what is being conducted by them. Do madhab books endorse baraat night worship?

The prayer of 12 rakaats between maghrib and isha at the night in the month of Rajab and the prayer of 100 rakaats during mid of Shabaan month’s 15th night are disgraced wrongdoings. The one who does this is a sinner. It is the duty of the responsible ones to stop this (the prayer).

(This is reported in 27th section of Part 1 of Shafi Madhab’s ‘Iyanathul Thalibeen’ book).  the prayer (with their innovated 100 rakaats) during Shabaan’s 15th night and the prayer during ashura are dreadful wrongdoings. The hadiths which are related to these are fabricated ones.

(This is reported in 27th section of Part 1 of Shafi madhab’s ‘Badhool Muyeenil’ book). Placing lights in masjids and streets is a wrongdoing (bidath). This is said in the page#232 of fifth part of Hanafi madhab’s ‘Bahroor Raahik’ book.

Those scholars who follow madhab books, why have they not followed this? Neither they follow Quran and hadiths; nor they follow madhabs. What are they going to do on the judgement day? May Allah save them!

Can one fast on baraat?

It is haraam to fast after the half of Shabaan. Because, Prophet Muhammad (saws) had said, do not fast once Shabaan has become half. This saying exists with proof.
(Book: Shafi Madhab’s ‘Iyanathul Thalibeen’, Part 2, Page 273)

Why this significance?

Are you thinking about, what is so much special on this day? It is said on that day the Shabaan’s 15th night shall occur. In order to make this night holy and sacred, the modern baraat scholars have uniquely designed with innovative new fatihas.

Do you know why all these outcries are made? It is due to accepting that celebrating baraat night as act of religion. Apart from that, they also ask this question. Is doing righteous act on significant night an act of wrongdoing?

No one has any authority to say that an act is sanctioned or is not sanctioned by the religion. This act of worship performed by them, is that mentioned in the Quran? Prophet Muhammad saws who was sent to explain the Quran, did he perform this? Or did he instruct? Or did companions do such that it was approved by him? Certainly, not! In the name of proof for defending baraat night and the acts of worship involved, certain incorrect explanations, weak and fabricated hadiths are used. With these they say look this is said in Islam!
Let them fear the hereafter! All the reports pointed them are weak or fabricated ones. On this regard, it is mentioned in their madhab books itself. Some of the proofs are wrongly interpreted.

First proof:

By the clear Book,
Indeed, We sent it down during a blessed night. Indeed, We were to warn [mankind].
On that night is made distinct every precise matter -
[Al Quran, Chapter 44, Verse 2-4]

Their argument is the blessed night mentioned in this verse is the baraat night. With regards to Al Quran, one verse will be explained by another verse or explained by hadith. Basing on that, which is the blessed night mentioned in this verse? The following verses are present in order to explain that.

Indeed, We sent the Qur'an down during the Night of Decree.
[Al Quran, Chapter 97, Verse 1]

Allah says that (blessed night) is Laylat Al Qadr. And the following verse explains that this night is present in the month of Ramadhan.

The month of Ramadhan [is that] in which was revealed the Qur'an, a guidance for the people and clear proofs of guidance and criterion. So whoever sights [the new moon of] the month, let him fast it; and whoever is ill or on a journey - then an equal number of other days. Allah intends for you ease and does not intend for you hardship and [wants] for you to complete the period and to glorify Allah for that [to] which He has guided you; and perhaps you will be grateful.
[Al Quran, Chapter 2, Verse 185]

It is very clear from these three verses that the blessed night referred to Laylat Al Qadr in the month of Ramadhan and not the night on 15th of Shabaan month. Therefore, the verse that they show and the baraat night with the act of worship they do for it, has no relationship.

Second proof:

It was narrated that ‘Ali bin Abu Talib said:
“The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: ‘When it is the night of the middle of Sha’ban, spend its night in prayer and observe a fast on that day. For Allah descends at sunset on that night to the lowest heaven and says: ‘Is there no one who will ask Me for forgiveness, that I may forgive him? Is there no one who will ask Me for provision, that I may provide for him? Is there no one who is afflicted by trouble, that I may relieve him?’ And so on, until dawn comes.’”

This is not a proven hadith. This one is a fabricated one. In the reporting chain the person called Ibn Abi Sabra is involved. He is known to fabricate hadiths as reported by Imam Ahma and Ibnul Mayeen.

This hadith is reported through another chain in the book of Aththarkeeb by Asbahaani (hadith number: 1831).  In that by the name of Umar bin Musa Avvajeehi is present in the reporting chain. As per Abu Haathim, he is also known to be for fabricating by saying things which Prophet Muhammad saws did not say.

Third proof:
Aishah narrated:
"I could not find the Messenger of Allah one night. So I left and found him at Al-Baqi. He said: 'Did you fear that you had been wronged by Allah and His Messenger?' I said: 'O Messenger of Allah! I thought that you had gone to one of your wives.' So he said: 'Indeed Allah, Mighty and Sublime is He, descends to the lowest Heavens during the night of the middle of Sha'ban, to grant forgiveness to more than the number of hairs on the sheep of (Banu) Kalb.'"

This hadith is also not a proven hadith. Yahya bin Abi Kaseer present in this report chain has not listened it from Urwa. By publishing the opinion of Imam Bukhari that Hajjaaj bin Arthaadh had not listened to Yahya bin Abi Kaseer, the reporter of this hadith Imam Tiirmidhi himself has clearly highlighted that this is a weak hadith.

Fourth proof:

Ata bin Yasar narrates: Rasul-Allah used to fast more during Shaban than any other month because the names of all those who will die next year are written down in this month
Book: Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah, 9764, Kitab al Siyam, Bab: 115; H#3
Fadhail Ramadhan - Ibnu Abit Dhunya, Part 1, Page 9, Hadith 8

The Ata bin Yasar who reports this hadith had not lived during the time of the Prophet. The reporter between him and Prophet Muhammad saws is missing. This report comes under the ‘mursal’ category’s weak status of report. Moreover, in the reporting chain Abdur Rahman bin Abdullah Al Maswoodi is present. He in his final times after coming to Baghdad is known to have gone mentally deranged. That is all the reports from him during his time in Baghdad is considered weak. Abdullah bin Sahraan is the one who reports from him. He had listened from this Al Maswoodi only after he was mentally deranged. Basing on this also this attains the level of weak hadith.

Fifth proof:

In the Ramadhan month’s 15th night and in Shaban month’s 15th night, who recites Surah Ikhlas 1000 times and then prays 100 rakats, he would not die until heaven is written for him.
Reported by: Muhammad bin Ali
Book: Fadhail Ramadhan - Ibnu Abit Dhunya, Part 1, Page 10,  Number 8

The Muhammad bin Ali who reports this hadith had not lived during the time of the Prophet. The reporter between him and Prophet Muhammad saws is missing. This report comes under the ‘mursal’ category’s weak status of report. Moreover, in the reporting chain many of them are not known to be identified. It is declared that this undoubtedly a fabricated one in the name of Prophet Muhammad saws as per Imam Ibnul Jawsi mentioned in his book Mawluat (Part 2, Page 129).
Moreover most of the ulemas in the hadith science saying that this is a fabricated one in the name of Prophet Muhammad saws and have also strictly warned that doing such are doing acts to attain hell. Among them one is Imam Suyoothi form Shafi madhab. In his book Al-Amru Bil Ittiba' Wan Nahyu 'An Al-Ibtida (The order to follow Prophet’s way; The prohibition to create innovations), he has warned on the ones during 15th of Shaban who pray those prayers which does not exist (in Part 1, Page 17). The wrongdoings and the disorder due to this are also listed by him.

Scholar Ibnu Abi Mulaika had strictly warned against the glorifying of the night of 15th of Shaban.
Ayyub reports: It was informed to Ibnu Abi Mulaika that the judge by the name Syadhan Munkiriyyu had said that the reward of 15th of Shaban’s night is similar to Laylat Al Qadr. Ibnu bi Mulaika said, while having stick in my hand if I heard saying such I would have thrashed him with the stick.

Book: Musannaf Abdur Razzak (Part 4, Page 317)

Muhammad bin Salaam reports: I asked Abdullah bin Mubarak (rah) about the descending (of Allah) during the night of 15th of Shaban. To that, Abdullah (rah) said, “Oh weak one! (The reports about 15th night are weak) Allah descends every night.”
Book: Aqeedathith Salaf Ashabul Hadhees, Part 1, Page 12

None of the proofs shown by them is proven! Therefore, they have innovated a new act. They should pay attention to the following words of Prophet Muhammad saws.

Narrated Aisha:
Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said, "If somebody innovates something which is not in harmony with the principles of our religion, that thing is rejected."

Sa'd b. Ibrahim reported:
I asked Qasim b. Muhammad about a person who had three dwelling houses and he willed away the third part of every one of these houses; he (Qasim b. Muhammad) said: All of them could be combined in one house; and then said: 'A'isha informed me that Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said: He who did any act for which there is no sanction from our behalf, that is to be rejected.

Therefore, in this pure religion everything has been clearly mentioned. In that, no one has the authority to add or remove.

Despite that if one does an act that is not taught by Allah and the Messenger of Allah, not just would that act be rejected but the one who performs such act would enter Hell. This is the warning of Prophet Muhammad saws.
