TI0135 - English - Invalidators of Wudhu(ablution)

[List of Contents - Rulings of prayer (Thozhugai sattangal book by MI Sulaiman)]

Invalidators of Wudhu(ablution)

After wudhu is done, the state of wudhu can get invalidated due to some events that happen around us. If wudhu gets invalidated, as per the Quran and the Hadiths, one has redo the wudhu for praying. Let's see them.

Excretion by defecation or urination

If one defecates after wudhu OR if one urinates, the wudhu(ablution) made earlier will become invalidated. One can pray only after repeating the wudhu.

O you who have believed, do not approach prayer while you are intoxicated until you know what you are saying or in a state of janābah[impurity after sexual intercourse], except those passing through [a place of prayer], until you have washed [your whole body]. And if you are ill or on a journey or one of you comes from the place of relieving himself or you have contacted women [i.e., had sexual intercourse] and find no water, then seek clean earth and wipe over your faces and your hands [with it]. Indeed, Allah is ever Pardoning and Forgiving.
[Al Quran, Chapter 4, v43]

O you who have believed, when you rise to [perform] prayer, wash your faces and your forearms to the elbows and wipe over your heads and wash your feet to the ankles. And if you are in a state of janābah[impurity after sexual intercourse], then purify yourselves. But if you are ill or on a journey or one of you comes from the place of relieving himself or you have contacted women and do not find water, then seek clean earth and wipe over your faces and hands with it. Allah does not intend to make difficulty for you, but He intends to purify you and complete His favor upon you that you may be grateful.
[Al Quran, Chapter 5, v6]

These two verses say that a person who defecates should perform tayammum if he does not have access to water, and that it is necessary to do wudhu if one has access to water, and that defecation shall invalidate a wudhu which had been already performed.

Based on the following hadith one can understand that the urination invalidates the wudhu.

The above hadith explains that urination invalidates the wudhu.

Breaking wind (pass gas) will invalidate the wudhu

Wudhu gets invalidated by breaking wind, just as wudhu being invalidated by defecation.

Narrated Abu Huraira:
Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said, "The prayer of a person who does Hadath (passes urine, stool or wind) is not accepted till he performs the ablution." A person from Hadaramout asked Abu Huraira, "What is 'Hadath'?" Abu Huraira replied, " 'Hadath' means the passing of wind."

Narrated Abu Huraira:
Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said, "A person is considered in prayer as long as he is waiting for the prayer in the mosque as long as he does not do Hadath." A non-Arab man asked, "O Abu Huraira! What is Hadath?" I replied, "It is the passing of wind (from the anus) (that is one of the types of Hadath).

If it feels like the wind is broken(passing gas)...

For some people, even if the wind is not broken, it can feel like the wind is broken. Or one may feel like a drop or two of urine has gone down. But there would be no sign of that in the dress. They do not need to be in anxiety for that. Only if it is observed explicitly for certain, then one can decide that wudhu is invalidated.

Narrated `Abbad bin Tamim:

Does eating cooked food invalidate wudhu?

In terms of ruling that eating green vegetables, fruits, etc. shall not invalidate wudhu, there is no differing hadiths. So eating these will not invalidate the wudhu.

Does eating cooked food invalidate wudhu? There are hadiths that give different opinions on this.

Based on this hadith we can understand that the ruling of ‘eating cooked food should follow with doing the wudhu (again)’ was in practice before; and was later changed. Therefore, eating cooked food will not invalidate the wudhu.

Eating camel meat will invalidate the wudhu

Although the wudhu will not get invalidated regardless what one has eaten; Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) however mentioned that eating camel meat specifically will invalidate the wudhu.

Nocturnal emission will invalidate the wudhu

The fluid that releases when a man has a sexual arousal is called madhy (  مَذَّاءً ) i.e. the pre-seminal discharge. It is fluid caused by desire, but not actually the semen itself.

Similar to how defecation and breaking wind invalidate the wudhu, the release of the pre-seminal discharge called ‘madhy’ as well invalidates the wudhu.

Narrated `Ali:

It is narrated in Sahih al-Bukhari 269 that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said, "Perform ablution after washing your organ (penis)."

Can vomiting invalidate the wudhu?

There are some hadiths which say that vomiting invalidates the wudhu. Not even a single hadith of them is authentic. So vomiting does not invalidate the wudhu.

Bleeding

There are some hadiths which say that if blood comes out of the body after performing wudhu, the wudhu shall become invalidated. All those hadiths are weak. So it is only valid that bleeding will not invalidate the wudhu.

Does touching woman invalidate the wudhu?

There is a disagreement among the scholars as to whether the wudhu will be invalidated, when a man touches a woman, or a woman touches a man.

This is based on a disagreement over how to interpret the two verses of the Noble Quran.

In both verses, it is said that touching women invalidates the wudhu.

The literal meaning of the word ‘contact’ is indeed ‘touch’. So one section says that if you touch women, wudhu would get invalidated.

There is no doubt that touching means touching. However, when the word ‘contacted’ is associated with women, it can sometimes mean touch. It can also sometimes mean having sexual intercourse.

In these verses, some section argue that the word ‘contacting’ women should be interpreted as having ‘sex with’.

We have to choose the opinion of the first section, if there was no other evidence to substantiate the opinion of the second section. Because, they take their argument based on direct meaning.

It is pertinent to take these two verses to mean 'touching women' means 'touching women' as there is a lot of external evidence to support the second view.

Narrated `Aisha:
It is not good that you people have made us (women) equal to dogs and donkeys. No doubt I saw Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) praying while I used to lie between him and the Qibla and when he wanted to prostrate, he pushed my legs and I withdrew them.

Similar hadiths also seen at Sahih al-Bukhari 382 and 513

This includes the understanding that the whole house was dark and that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) could only know what they were going to prostrate with their fingers.

With this hadith in mind, let’s examine the above verses.

The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) would not have touched his wife's feet, if the meaning of those verses was that touching women invalidates the wudhu. He would not have continued to pray after being touched.

If there is a difference of opinion as to the meaning of a verse in the Holy Quran, the Prophet (pbuh)'s interpretation alone can be the best solution.

This hadith does not say that he accidentally laid hands on his wife. It appears that he has deliberately touched his wife to convey the message of ‘bend your legs’. Therefore, it is not appropriate to take the meaning of contacting women' to mean 'touching women' in the above verse.

Even after seeing this hadith, some people tend to justify their opinion by giving innovative interpretation.

This does not mean that Ayesha (r.a.) was contacted directly by the Prophet (s.a.w.s.). There would have been clothing on her; The Prophet (pbuh) may have contacted on that garment, is it not? Is the innovative interpretation they give.

No one completely covers one’s body while sleeping with the husband. And one would not completely cover the legs while sleeping. Even when sleeping, there is a chance that the clothes would move off during sleep. Moreover if there had been light source, then one can assume that it would have been possible to see the exact place covered by the cloth to contact the appropriate place. Is the clothing there on the foot, when was dark without lights? Or is it not there? It is clear that he did not investigated in this manner and then contacted with his finger; therefore if you touch women, one understands that wudhu will not be invalidated.

Does sleeping invalidate the wudhu?

Does sleeping invalidate the wudhu? Scholars differ on whether. Scholars have differing opinions in that.

Some hadiths say that if you fall asleep, wudhu will be invalidated and some hadiths say wudhu will not be invalidated.

This hadith says that just as defecation invalidates the wudhu, so does sleep invalidate the wudhu. The following hadith has a different take on this.

Kuraib, the freed slave of Ibn `Abbas, reported that Ibn `Abbas narrated to him that he spent a night in the house of Maimuna, the mother of the believers, who was his mother's sister. I lay down across the cushion, whereas the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) and his wife lay down on it length-wise. The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) slept till midnight, or a little before midnight, or a little after midnight, and then got up and began to cast off the effects of sleep from his face by rubbing with his hand, and then recited the ten concluding verses of Surah Al-`Imran. He then stood up near a hanging water-skin and performed ablution well, and then stood up and prayed, Ibn `Abbas said:

I also stood up and did the same, as the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) had done, and then went to him and stood by his side. The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) placed his right hand upon my head and took hold of my right ear and twisted it, and then observed a pair of rak`ahs, again a pair of rak`ahs, again a pair of rak`ahs, again a pair of rak`ahs, again a pair of rak`ahs, again a pair of rak`ahs, and then observed Witr and then lay down till the Mu'adhdhin came to him. He (the Holy Prophet) then stood up and observed two short rak`ahs, and then went out (to the mosque) and observed the dawn prayer.

While examining these two hadiths, Ibn 'Abbas (r.a.h.) said that they slept while standing was certainly not a deep sleep; It would have been half asleep. So the idea that connects the two hadiths is ‘deep sleep’ invalidates the wudhu; One can conclude that half-sleep does not invalidate the wudhu.

Will touching the genitals invalidate the wudhu?

There are various opinions among scholars whether the wudhu will get invalidated, when men or women touch their genitals after peforming wudhu.

Some section say that wudhu will get invalidated no matter how intentionally, forgetfully, or unknowingly if it gets touched.

Some people say that no matter how you touch it, the wudhu will not get invalidated.

If you touch it intentionally, then wudhu will get invalidated; Some section say that if we forgetfully or unknowingly touch the genitals, then wudhu will not get invalidated.

If touched with desire, wudhu will get invalidated; Some section say, if touched otherwise wudhu will not get invalidated.

Touching the genitals directly will invalidate the wudhu; While the cloth is on the genitals, if one touch it while wearing a glove on hands, then wudhu will not get invalidated say some sections.

The reason for the disagreement is that hadiths of differing nature have been reported on this issue.

Although this hadith refers to men, there are also hadiths in this ruling which assume that men and women are equal.

The Prophet (s.a.w.s.) said: ‘If any of the men touches their genitals those must do wudhu; If any of the women touches their genitals those too should do the wudhu'
Books: Daraqutni 1/147, Bayhaqi 1/132, Muntaqa 1/18, Ahmad 6779

Man or Woman when the person touch their genitals, their wudhu will be invalidated. These Prophetic sayings clearly state that to do wudhu again to pray.

The Prophet (s.a.w.s.) said: If one of you touches their organ with his hand without any veil, then that person has to do wudhu.
Reporter: Abu Hurairah (r.a.h.)

There is no doubt that the above hadiths are authentic.

However, there are hadiths that differ from the opinion of this hadith.

It was narrated that Talq bin 'Ali said:
"We went out as a delegation and when we arrived with the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) he accepted our oath of allegiance and we prayed with him. When he had finished the prayer, a man who looked like a Bedouin came to him and said: 'O Messenger of Allah, what do you think about a man who touched his penis during the Salah?' He said: 'It is just a part of you,' or 'a piece of you.'"

Similar hadiths also seen at Jami` at-Tirmidhi 85, Sunan Abi Dawud 182, Sunan Ibn Majah 483 and Ahmad 15700

Hadiths of this opinion have also been recorded in Ibn Hibban 3/403, Daraqutni 1/149, and Tabarani’s Al Kabir 8/330.

If the two authentic hadiths seem to collide with each other, then properly the two messages can be combined for conclusion.

Touching one's genitals can occur in two ways.

The first type is to consider and touch an organ like any other.

The second type touches based on the uniqueness of that organ.

Wudhu does not get invalidated for the first kind of touch.

We can conclude that wudhu will be invalidated by the second type of touch.

If an ant bites at a specific place on the body we put our hand on that place and scratch it. Likewise, we also scratch the area when it feels like an ant bite or something crawling in the genital area. One would not do so considering the unique purpose of that organ. One does this by treating it just like any other organ. If one touches genital organs like this, wudhu will not be invalidated.

When we wear underwear one’s hand unknowingly might touch the organ. Like how the hand touches the other organs, we consider similarly it has got touched. If touched in this manner as well, wudhu will not get invalidated.

Apart from this, the touch accompanied with desire cannot be considered as touching just like any other organ. It can only be considered as, the touching by considering the uniqueness of the genital organ. If one touches in this manner, wudhu will get invalidated.

From the phrase used by the Prophet (s.a.w.s.) ‘It is just a part of you’, we can arrive to this opinion.

Touching the penis will invalidate the wudhu, refers to the touch with desire.

Both hadiths become applicable, when it is considered that wudhu will not get invalidated when genitals are touched normally.

Patients whose wudhu get invalidated frequently

For people with frequent urination, frequent flatulence (breaking wind) and persistent diarrhea, things that invalidate the wudhu often keep occuring.

Those who are suffering with such difficulties should perform wudhu once for every prayer. After doing so, even if the occurings of the above releases and persists, the wudhu will not get invalidated. The wudhu should be repeated when it is time for the next prayer.

Narrated `Aisha:
Fatima bint Abi Hubaish came to the Prophet (ﷺ) and said, "O Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) I get persistent bleeding from the uterus and do not become clean. Shall I give up my prayers?" Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) replied, "No, because it is from a blood vessel and not the menses. So when your real menses begins give up your prayers and when it has finished wash off the blood (take a bath) and offer your prayers." Hisham (the sub narrator) narrated that his father had also said, (the Prophet (ﷺ) told her): "Perform ablution for every prayer till the time of the next period comes."
